Manilow the Object of a Romantic Comedy?

So the word on the Hollywood streets, as reported in Variety magazine, is that a new movie may be in the works that involves a roadtrip to see Vegas to see a Barry Manilow show. Sound familiar?

Apparently R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe has a production company, Single Cell Pictures, that is teaming up with Tom Hank’s production company, Playtone, to work on a romantic comedy where fans with various plotlines from different parts of the country roadtrip to converge on Las Vegas to see Manilow play at Mandalay Bay. Think “Detroit Rock City” meets “Copacabana!”

The film is as yet untitled but is said to feature Manilow songs throughout, and there is a rumor of Barry perhaps performing a song or 2. Manilow is expected to collaborate on the project.  Stay tuned!

Manilow Remembers Michael Jackson

Upon learning of Michael Jackson’s death of an apparent heart attack on June 25, 2009, Barry Manilow posted his respects on his official website, manilow.com.

He remarked, “He was one of the most gifted and original talents the world has ever known. He inspired a generation of young people and amazed the rest of the world. There has never been anyone like him. There will never be another Michael Jackson.”

At Jackson’s request, Manilow performed a medley of MJ hit songs at the 1984 American Music Awards where Jackson was honored.  Such anecdotes are pouring in from artists of all backgrounds, proving once again the cross-generational impact Michael Jackson had on music.
